Israel intercepted a Gaza-bound aid ship led by climate activist Greta Thunberg on Sunday (June 8), detaining the activists on board. The vessel, named "Madleen," was part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) and aimed to deliver aid to Gaza amid an ongoing blockade. The Israeli military boarded the ship, citing security concerns, and redirected it to Ashdod port for a quick deportation process via Ben-Gurion Airport.
The flotilla's mission was to deliver essential supplies, including baby formula and medical aid, to Gaza, where a prolonged conflict and blockade have exacerbated a humanitarian crisis. However, Israel's foreign ministry labeled the mission a "media provocation," stating that the ship carried less than a single truckload of aid. The ministry assured that the confiscated goods would be delivered to Gaza through authorized humanitarian channels.
The activists, including French lawmaker Rima Hassan and Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham, were detained and are expected to be deported to their home countries. Israel's defense minister, Israel Katz, instructed the military to show the activists footage of Hamas attacks on Israel from October 7, 2023, upon their arrival at Ashdod port.
The incident has sparked international reactions. The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the interception, calling it a violation of international law. Amnesty International criticized the blockade and urged for safe access to Gaza. France's President Emmanuel Macron requested the swift return of the French nationals aboard the "Madleen." Meanwhile, protests erupted in Ashdod, with demonstrators demanding the release of the detained activists.
