The San Francisco Giants have fired manager Bob Melvin just months after his option for the 2026 season was picked up in July, former catcher turned president of baseball operations Buster Posey confirmed in a statement.
Melvin, 63, went 161-163 in two seasons, which included an 81-81 finish in 2025.
"After meeting with ownership, I met with Bob today to inform him of my decision,” Posey said via MLB.com. "On behalf of the organization, I want to express my appreciation to Bob for his dedication, professionalism, and class. I wish him all the best.
“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team. The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.”
The Giants were briefly tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for first-place in the NL West Division standings and added All-Star Rafael Devers in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox in June, but went 40-50 during the last 90 games of the season, which included being swept in back-to-back homestands against the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates -- both of whom also missed the playoffs -- immediately after the All-Star break.
Melvin has worked as a manager for 22 MLB seasons with a 1,678-1,588 (.514 winning percentage) overall record for the Giants, Seattle Mariners (2003-2004), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-2009), Oakland Athletics (2011-2021) and San Diego Padres (2022-2023).
