A family in Georgia is demanding answers after six-year-old Victoria King was found unresponsive in a pool during a school field trip. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday (October 8) at Carlton Farms in Rockmart, where Victoria was visiting with McGarity Elementary School. A staff member noticed Victoria was missing around noon, and she was later discovered in a pool next to a house on the property. Despite bystanders' attempts at life-saving measures, Victoria was pronounced dead at Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center in Rome.
Victoria's family has expressed their grief and confusion, stating they were unaware that a pool would be part of the field trip. They are seeking clarity on how school staff lost track of her and how she accessed the pool. The family also noted that they have not received direct communication or condolences from McGarity Elementary School, which has added to their distress. In a statement, they said, "The family is still in deep grief and struggling with unanswered questions."
Principal Jamesa Hodge of McGarity Elementary expressed condolences in a letter to the school community, stating, "Our hearts are with the student's family and loved ones." The school is offering counseling and bereavement support to students and staff. Carlton Farms has paused activities and expressed their devastation over the incident, asking for prayers for the family and all involved.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Polk County Sheriff's Office are conducting an investigation into Victoria's death. As the community mourns, Victoria was laid to rest on Monday.
